Moderator interview questions

Use the written form to filter. Use this list on a voice call or ticket with the shortlist. Interrupt if they speechify — you want the next five minutes of an incident, not a TED talk.

Warm-up (2 minutes)
You are checking whether they can talk, not collecting another essay.
  1. What timezone are you in, and when are you usually around on a weekday?
  2. Which channels here do you actually spend time in?
  3. If we say no, what happens — do you stay in the community?
Judgement
Walk a live incident. Interrupt if they speechify.
  1. A regular is slurring in general after a warn. Staff chat is empty. What do you do in the next five minutes?
  2. Someone reports a DM screenshot of harassment. The accused says it's photoshopped. Walk it.
  3. Ping-mods is on fire and tickets are backed up. What do you handle first, and what do you ignore?
  4. A raid starts with 20 new accounts dropping invites. Your first three clicks?
Integrity
If they dodge recusal, end the interview.
  1. Your friend is in a ticket you're assigned. What do you do, word for word, in staff chat?
  2. Would you ever send a staff screenshot to prove a point in public?
  3. You've been removed from staff somewhere. Tell us the version they would tell.
  4. You timeout the wrong person in front of 200 members. What happens next?
Admin / lead (skip for trial mod)
People management, not more mute scenarios.
  1. A mod you like is leaking ticket details as jokes. The conversation you have with them.
  2. Two admins disagree on a ban and the owner is offline for a week.
  3. A staff member is burnt out and making sloppy calls. How do you take tools away without a public execution?
Close
Set the trial expectation out loud.
  1. This would start as a trial role with limited tools. Is that a problem?
  2. Anything we should know that isn't on the form?
  3. Questions for us — about hours, logs, or who you report to?

Questions

Should we interview everyone who submits a Discord moderator application?
No. Fail people on the written form first. Interview the shortlist so you are not sitting through motivation speeches.
What if they freeze on a raid question?
That is data. A moderator who cannot talk through five minutes of an incident will not do better at 1am.
Can we use this instead of a written application?
Not if you hire more than a handful of people. The form filters; the interview confirms. ApplyDesk keeps the written answers next to your notes.
